Third grade students start each day with prayer and then a reflection on the virtue of the week. They read for school masses and complete a community service project. They also have the opportunity to participate in the sacrament of Confession every month. In theology, third graders learn about the miracles of Jesus and explore the seven sacraments. They complete a saint project in October for the school’s Saints Fair, and during Advent they fill a Jesse Tree with ornaments following the timeline of Salvation History.
In Language Arts, students learn to become discerning readers while they continue to work on spelling, grammar, and cursive handwriting. They complete at least one novel study per trimester as a class. They learn about elements of narrative and compose their own stories, poetry, and informative essays. They also learn about poetic forms and recite poetry everyday.
The main objective of third grade math is mastering and understanding the patterns of multiplication and division. They are also introduced to area, perimeter, and fractions. Science topics focus on the cyclical patterns in nature: geography and the rock cycle, weather and the water cycle, and the life cycles of plants and animals . Third graders complete nature studies on different elements of the natural world and learn how to use scientific keys with specimens.
In history, third grade students learn about the Roman empire. They read Roman fables and mythology, learn about the Roman senate structure, and complete hands-on activities to explore Roman engineering.
