This year, we prepare for our Sacraments. For first Reconciliation (Confession), students learn about the concept of sin, forgiveness, and the sacrament of reconciliation, including how to prepare for their first confession. For first Holy Communion, students are introduced to the Eucharist, learning about the significance of the Mass, the role of the priest and parishioners, and the importance of receiving Jesus in the Holy Communion, including how to prepare for their first communion.
In addition to the sacraments, we study the Trinity, understanding the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We also study the life of Jesus: learning about key events in Jesus' life, such as His birth, miracles, teachings, crucifixion, and resurrection. Furthermore, we study about the Church and its Seasons: including major feasts and liturgical seasons including Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
We practice and learn about prayer and worship. Students are taught traditional prayers such as the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, but also learn prayers that are spontaneous and from the heart.
We participate in Mass on Mondays and Thursdays (and other holy days) and we learn about the structure of the Mass and learning about the parts of the liturgy.
We teach virtues including kindness, honesty, and respect just to name a few. Students learn virtue by studying the lives of Saints whose exemplary lives inspire moral behavior and faith.
Language Arts
Reading: Students build their reading skills through phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension by engaging with age-appropriate texts and stories. We work to build stamina in consecutive reading time.
Writing: Students develop their basic writing skills, including sentence formation, spelling, and simple paragraph writing.
Listening and Speaking: Students enhance their listening skills through stories and discussions, and practicing speaking through sharing ideas and participating in conversations.
Mathematics
Students grow in their understanding of numbers and operations as we practice addition and subtraction, recognizing patterns, and working with place value.
We study geometry, identifying shapes and understanding spatial relationships.
We also study measurement and interpreting data. We count coins and dollars to measure objects using standard and non-standard units, and even interpret simple data in graphs.
Science
We study various sciences including life science (exploring plants and animals), physical science (learning about basic concepts of matter and energy), and earth science (understanding water and earth’s geographical features).
History
We begin our history curriculum by forming an idea of our own community. We talk about our families, community roles, and basic concepts of responsibility and respect. We learn where our community is located with an introduction to maps, basic geographic concepts, and an understanding of local and global communities. From here, we can learn about our past. We focus on learning about the Ancient Romans.
Art, Music, and Physical Education
We explore creativity through drawing, painting, and other art activities. We engage with music through singing and understanding different types of music. We develop motor skills, understanding the importance of physical activity, and participating in games and sports.
